When should you go to the veterinary emergency?

The emergency service is strictly for urgent, life-threatening problems only.

Typical emergencies are conditions that are life-threatening or may lead to severe consequences.

Typical emergency cases

  • High fever
  • Severe lethargy
  • Collapse, unconsciousness, seizures
  • Persistent vomiting/diarrhoea causing marked weakness
  • Bloody vomit, bloody urine
  • Bloated abdomen, suspected gastric dilatation/volvulus
  • Inability to urinate
  • Blue gums/tongue, frothy or bloody coughing
  • Dystocia (stuck labour)
  • Severe bite wounds, mauling
  • Severe active bleeding, deep wounds
  • Hit by a car
  • Paralysis of both hind legs or all limbs
  • Prolapsed eyeball
  • Known ingestion of a toxic substance (e.g., antifreeze)
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., facial swelling after vaccination), choking, laboured breathing, heatstroke
Other cases may also qualify after a triage phone call with the on-duty vet.

What to know about the local rota system

  • Rota system

    This central number connects to a rotating call centre. When you call, the system automatically forwards you to the practice currently on duty.

  • Hours

    Practices typically take city emergency calls until midnight.

  • Important rule

    Calling ahead is mandatory in every case, so the vet on duty can receive the urgent case.
